By learning to observe telling body language and speech patterns, you can become your own lie detect

Get the whole truth—and nothing but the truth—every time.

Want to know why your date was actually late, whether your girlfriend is truly headed out shopping, or what your best friend really thinks of your new haircut? Read on, Sherlock. By learning to observe telling body language and speech patterns, you can become your own lie detector.

The Top 13 Signs That Someone’s Lying
If you suspect that someone is lying, pay attention to both body language and speech. Here are the giveaway signs that someone’s fibbing:

1. Lack of eye contact: One of the classic signs of deception is little or no direct eye contact. If someone is telling the truth, he’s likely to give you his full attention and look right at you. If he’s lying, he’ll glance down or look from side to side.

2. Looking up and right: Looking up and to the right triggers the part of the brain linked to the imagination. In contrast, if someone looks up and to the left, she’s stimulating the section of the brain associated with memories. As a general rule, a glance up and right means someone’s lying. Looking up and left means someone’s telling the truth.

3. Stillness: The less someone gestures, the more likely it is that he’s keeping a secret or telling a lie.

4. Stiff movements: Someone who’s truly emphasizing a point will gesture with her arms and hands in a fluid or firm way. Someone who’s withholding the truth may use her arms, but the movements will appear stiff instead of natural.

5. Closed fingers: Fully extended fingers signal openness. If the fingers are closed, it’s a sign of withdrawal and defensiveness.

6. Hand placement: Observe whether the person you’re talking to:
1. Places his hands on his lap or clenches them
2. Covers his mouth when speaking
3. Touches or covers his face when listening
4. Rubs his eyes
5. Scratches on or behind the side of his ear

7. Crossed arms and legs: Folding your arms across your chest, crossing your legs, and keeping your limbs close to your body indicates that you’re protecting something. When you’re feeling relaxed and don’t have anything to conceal, you look relaxed, with your arms and legs outstretched.

8. Tilting the head away: If the person speaking or listening tilts her head away from you, she is revealing her discomfort with the situation. In contrast, shifting her head toward you implies that she is trying to get closer to the information.

9. Bad posture: Standing or sitting with the shoulders back indicates confidence, whereas a hunched posture with the hands buried in pockets suggests insecurity and uncertainty.

10. Inconsistencies when speaking: Note conflicting details and contradictions.

11. A change in vocal pitch: If you’re familiar with someone’s normal speaking voice, you’ll notice when it raises in pitch—a sign that the person’s uncomfortable.

12. A distinct pause: Someone who’s not telling the truth may have difficulty coming up with a believable story or detail on the spot and might pause to think it through. Pay attention to what he says after pausing. It might be a lie.

13. Variation in the rate of speech: Again, depending on how well you know the person, you could notice not only a change in the voice but also a variation in the rate of speech. Someone who normally talks slowly may quicken her speech if she’s worried about being caught, and someone who normally talks quickly may slow down her speech, choosing her next words cautiously.

Now, here's an interesting thought to the above:

1. Lack of eye contact...what if the person feels intimiated by the other? This too could cause lack of eye contact.

4. Stiff movements - i'm getting older and can't do the cartwheels like i used to..............does this mean i'm lying? lololololol

6.4 Rubs eyes....I have allergies! Again, does this mean i'm lying?

9. Bad posture.....i've had bad posture since i was a kid!

see? there could be a myriad of reasons for the things folks do...although I do find this blog informative and interesting!

Have a sparkling day!
